BDA Award Lower Saxony 2023

The housing project “Together Living” realized in Hanover by SMAQ with the residential construction company Theo Gerlach was awarded the BDA Award Lower Saxony 2023. The BDA Lower Saxony Award has been awarded since 1976, making it the oldest architecture award in Lower Saxony. The award is given for exemplary architectural achievements.

Jury statement: Instead of a series of solitary units, three of the four cubic residential buildings are merged into one unit through intersections, creating aesthetically convincing communal areas on the ground floor level. The covered colonnade promotes encounters between residents and represent a useful addition to the green communal courtyards. Indented balconies and the subtle structure and ornamentation of the brick facade give the buildings an atmospheric power and contemporary homeliness. At the same time, the red brick is a material from the surrounding area. The floor plans could be designed flexibly thanks to living zones that are self-supporting up to the facade – and future adjustments are possible. It is also noteworthy that no distinction was made between socially subsidized and owner-occupied apartments in terms of design and value.

The BDA Award Lower Saxony 2023 award ceremony took place on November 23rd at Sprengel Museum in Hannover.
