Intergenerational Centre – Neubrandenburg, Germany

The intergenerational centre is formulated as an ensemble of four, partially linked building blocks. The individual building blocks are clearly assigned to the different areas of use of the intergenerational centre. In terms of their dimensions and storeys, the buildings vary between three and five storeys. The buildings are set to complete the quarter between Niels-Stensen-Straße, Ikarusstraße and  Yuri-Gagarin-Ring. The two residential buildings of 5-storey take up the height of the existing perimeter block development. Opposite the entrance to the Lindetalcenter, the buildings of the ensemble form an inviting entrance courtyard on the main road, to which public uses orientated at the ground floor. The 3-storey building, which accommodates the kindergarten and a care home, is positioned recessed from the Yuri Gagarin Ring. The street space of  Yuri-Gagarin-Ring is well formulated by the ensemble, rhythmized and thus upgraded as an urban space.

The entrance yard on Yuri-Gagarin-Ring creates a semi-public meeting place and an interface with the living environment. Here, the paths of users of the intergenerational centre intersect casually and unplanned. The programm at the groundfloor – bakery with café, service providers and meeting place – additionally enliven the entrance yard. An arcade framing the courtyard connects the entrances of the different programms with each other protected from rain and offers a shady spot in the summer for a chat or a café in front of the neighborhood café.
