Lecture / University of Edinburgh

Sabine Müller, Geddes Visiting Fellow 2025/26 at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA), will give a public lecture entitled ‘Fields and Figures: Design as Environmental Agent’ at the University of Edinburgh’s College of Arts.

In a planetary condition marked by complexity and exhaustion, how can design remain relevant when urban, architectural and landscape interventions are necessarily localised and limited? In her lecture, Sabine Müller explores this question through a variety of speculative and built projects at the urban edge. She illustrates how precise design figures can enliven the social and environmental landscape, using “characters†like the Giraffe, the Telegraph, and the Beaver to propose adaptive, transformative and catalytic approaches. By viewing design as a spatialisation of broader systems, Müller demonstrates how design can serve as an environmental agent capable of transforming a larger field, thereby fostering social and ecological inclusivity.
